This is the most important decision you will make here. "Los Angeles" is not one destination, and because of traffic, ten miles in the wrong direction costs you an hour a day for months. Base yourself near the reason you came.
CentralCentral, flat and increasingly walkable, with a real downtown, rail access and short drives in most directions, which in Los Angeles is worth a great deal. A strong middle choice on price and the best hedge if your days take you all over the region.
South BayA small-town grid of bungalows next to the region's aerospace and technology corridor, minutes from Los Angeles International Airport and the beach. The most practical base in the region for a project assignment, and better value than the beach towns just north.
CoastalSpace, quiet, canyon trails and open coast along Pacific Coast Highway. The tradeoff is real: you are a long drive from everything, on one road that can close or crawl, and groceries are a trip rather than an errand. Choose this for the stay itself, not for commuting.
South BayThe South Bay beach towns: flat, walkable within themselves, quieter than the Westside, and connected by miles of beach path. The best balance here of coast, calm and airport access. Homes sit close together, so ask about noise and parking.
InlandInland under the San Gabriel Mountains, with Craftsman streets, mature trees, its own walkable downtown and rail into Downtown Los Angeles. Hotter in summer than the coast, no June Gloom, and better value than anywhere near the beach.
WestsideThe most walkable stretch of the Westside, with the beach path at the end of the street, dense coffee and dining, and a heavy concentration of coworking. Top of the price range, and street parking is genuinely hard. Insist on a dedicated space.
Practical detail
Living in Los Angeles for a month or more comes down to one decision made well: where you base yourself. Everything else is easy. Full-size supermarkets, natural-foods chains, international markets and pharmacy chains are dense across the whole region, and the weekly open-air farmers markets in Santa Monica, Culver City, Pasadena and the South Bay beach towns are among the best in the country. Healthcare access is as good as anywhere in the western United States. Los Angeles County has one of the largest hospital, teaching-hospital and specialty-clinic sectors in the country, which is why healthcare travelers are a steady share of longer stays here. Coworking is concentrated in Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, El Segundo and Downtown Los Angeles.
