Because the museums, galleries, and performance venues open their major programs then, and the weather cooperates. From autumn through late winter Los Angeles has its clearest air, its mildest days, and a full cultural calendar, which makes it the strongest stretch of the year for anyone spending a month or more in the city.
The museum landscape is spread across the basin rather than clustered in one district. Significant institutions sit on the Westside, along the mid-city museum row, in Downtown Los Angeles, in Pasadena, and out toward the coast. That geography is an argument for a long stay. You are not going to do them in a week and you should not try. One museum per weekend for two months is a far better plan than three in a day. Several of the largest institutions do sit close enough to one another on the mid-city stretch to make an afternoon on foot possible, which is unusual for this city.
Autumn and winter are also when the gallery districts turn over their shows and the performance season runs. Openings cluster on particular evenings of the week, most are free to attend, and they are the easiest way into the city's art world without a ticket. Timed-entry reservations have become normal at the larger institutions, so book a slot a few days ahead rather than turning up.
The seasonal honesty: this is the rainy part of the year, and while Los Angeles rain is infrequent it arrives in concentrated storms that snarl every road in the basin and occasionally close stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway. Winter days are short and genuinely cool after dark. The compensation is that the days immediately after a storm are the clearest of the year, with the mountains visible from the middle of the city, which is the best possible day to be outside between two indoor ones. Cool evenings also make this the season when the outdoor courtyards and sculpture gardens are comfortable to sit in rather than something to hurry through.
Specific exhibitions and performance programs change annually and are announced season by season, so check each institution's own calendar once you arrive. The dependable pattern is the shape of it: major shows opening in autumn and running through winter, in a city that is at its most comfortable and least crowded exactly when the rest of the country assumes California is only worth visiting in summer.
Space it out and use the weekdays. A stay of a month or more lets you visit the big institutions on a Wednesday afternoon when the galleries are quiet and the parking structure is half empty, which is a completely different experience from a Saturday.
Pick a base close to the two or three institutions you care most about. In a city this large, proximity is what turns intention into attendance, and your local manager can tell you what the drive from a specific neighborhood is actually like.
