A retro split-level studio in Carpinteria, a short walk from the beach. The main level holds a living room in neutral tones with pops of orange from the artwork and throw pillows, a couple of sofas, a large TV, and a laid-back style that has not been redecorated out of it.

The kitchen is compact but nicely functional — tiled countertops, a refrigerator, a stovetop and oven, and a blender. There is a dining room table plus seats at the breakfast bar overlooking the kitchen, which is enough to cook properly night after night rather than for a weekend.

Upstairs, the sleeping loft has a comfortable bed, a skylight, reading lamps and a shelf full of books. The full bathroom is on the loft level as well.

Carpinteria State Beach is about 200 yards away, and the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve is close for a morning hike along the trails, where you might see seals, sea lions and a variety of seabirds. There is hiking at Salt Creek Marsh Nature Preserve, dozens of restaurants sit within a few blocks for the evenings you do not feel like cooking, and Santa Barbara is 12 miles away with museums, theaters, shops and restaurants.

One thing to know up front: the neighboring units may have tenants who smoke, and although this unit is smoke-free, sometimes the smoke lingers in the unit. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., check-in is 4:00 p.m. and check-out is 10:00 a.m.
