Is the Santa Barbara International Film Festival worth timing a stay around?

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival — SBIFF — runs for eleven days each February, screening more than 200 features and shorts at venues including the Arlington Theatre and SBIFF's Riviera Theater, alongside filmmaker Q&As, panels and tributes. For a stay of a month or more it is one of the better reasons to be here in the off season rather than in July.

The counterintuitive case for a late-winter stay on this coast is strong. The hills are green from winter rain. The air after a storm is as clear as it gets all year. The mountains behind town look their best. The front-country trails are at their peak. The whole region is quieter and cheaper than it is in summer. The one thing missing from a winter stay here is a reason to be downtown in the evening, and the festival supplies it.

Used properly, a festival is a resident's event rather than a visitor's. You are not flying in for three days and cramming six screenings into them. You already live here, you have nothing else booked, so you take the weekday afternoon and early-evening slots that nobody fights over, walk in, and walk home. The big evening events sell out and draw crowds. The small daytime screenings in the middle of the run are often half full, and they are where you find the thing you would never have chosen. That is the same principle as everything else in this region: the second and third pass beats the first.

Two honest points. February is the wet season here. Most of the year's rain falls between December and March, and it can arrive as several days of steady, heavy rain rather than an afternoon shower, which is fine for a festival week and much less fine if you came for the beach. And downtown parking gets tight in the evenings during the run, so plan to walk, ride a bike, or take the local bus.

The festival is not the only thing happening. Late winter and spring across this region bring a steady run of smaller arts, music and community events in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Ventura and Oxnard, most of them free or nearly free, and most of them advertised nowhere except locally. Get into the habit of reading the local weekly listings. On a stay of a month or more, that is where you find the version of a place that people here actually use.

If you're here for a month or more

A festival week is pleasant at a distance and much better up close. If your stay covers February, look for a home within walking or easy cycling distance of downtown Santa Barbara, because the evenings are the point and driving home from them undoes most of the pleasure. If you are basing yourself in Ventura or Oxnard for the value, plan on the coastal train for the evening events and lean on the daytime screenings instead, and ask your local manager how long the walk to the station really is.
