Plan for the practical side, because this is the busiest stretch of the year. Traffic through Monterey thickens during the festival season, parking near the middle of town becomes a genuine consideration rather than an afterthought, and long-stay homes across the Peninsula are limited and book early — this is an expensive region and autumn is when demand peaks. If you want a stay that covers this season, treat booking as something to do months ahead rather than weeks.
One honest correction to the picture. Early autumn is the clearest stretch of the year, but it is not a guarantee. Fog still shows up, sometimes for a full day, and the first real storms of the season can arrive by late autumn. Bring layers, expect at least a few gray days inside any month here, and understand that even a good weather window on this coast is a probability rather than a promise. What autumn does give you is the best odds in the calendar, plus the music.
Do not build the whole stay around the festival weekend — book a stay that arrives before the season starts and runs past it, so the music becomes one good evening inside a longer month instead of the reason for a rushed trip.
